San Gimignano: “The Manhattan of the Middle Ages”
Have you ever heard of the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”? You will find it just under 20 kilometres from the Tenuta delle Rose. San Gimignano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 – and rightly so, for the great past of this small town can still be felt almost tangibly in its streets and alleyways today. In the Middle Ages, the patrician families of San Gimignano constantly tried to outdo one another – building one tower house after another. Some of these imposing towers survive to this day and give the town its world-famous skyline. San Gimignano is also famous for its “gelato”: no fewer than two ice-cream parlours claim to make the best ice cream in the world. We cannot say for certain which of them is right – so we suggest you simply decide for yourself.
