Palio di Siena – 2 July and 16 August 2027

This horse race lasts a mere 100 seconds – but anyone who has experienced the Palio in Siena will remember it forever. For centuries, much of Siena’s public life has revolved around this ancient tradition. Twice a year, 17 city districts (contrade) compete for the “Palio” – a painted cloth banner – but above all for glory and honour. Riding bareback, the jockeys race around the Piazza del Campo in the heart of the city. Days beforehand, the square is prepared with a layer of sand. Costumed groups from the contrade parade through the streets playing music, the horses are blessed in the contrade’s churches – and a very special atmosphere fills the entire city. For the winners, the joy knows no bounds – every single time.
