Someone once wrote of Florence’s “Calcio Storico” – “historic football” in English: “The game has as much to do with football as Jaws has to do with Flipper.” Since the 15th century, four teams from the city’s historic quarters have battled it out on a pitch measuring 60 by 30 metres. The most important rule: there essentially aren’t any. A spectacle for the hardy – but one steeped in long tradition and great emotion. The filmmaker Stefano Lorenzi was so fascinated by the “Calcio Storico” that last year he immortalised this tradition in the widely acclaimed documentary “I calcianti”.
